Saint Augustine (354-430)

Disputation Against Fortunatus

Translated by Richard Stothert

Chapter 34

Augustine said: Why our Lord said: “I have power to lay down my soul and power to take it,” is known to all; because He was about to suffer and to rise again. But I ask of you again and again, If God could in no way suffer injury, why did he send souls hither?

Fortunatus said: To impose a limit on contrary nature.
