Saint Augustine (354-430)

Disputation Against Fortunatus

Translated by Richard Stothert

Chapter 32

Augustine said: And I say: Why did God, omnipotent, inviolable, immutable, whom nothing could injure, send hither the soul, to miseries, to error, to those things that we suffer?

Fortunatus said: For it has been said: “I have power to lay down my soul and I have power to take it again.” Now He said that by the will of God the soul went forth.
