William Wordsworth (1770-1850)
Written in March, while resting on the Bridge at the Foot of Brothers Water
The Cock is crowing,
xxThe stream is flowing,
xxThe small birds twitter,
xxThe lake doth glitter,
The green field sleeps in the sun;
xxThe oldest and youngest
xxAre at work with the strongest;
xxThe cattle are grazing,
xxTheir heads never raising;
There are forty feeding like one!
xxLike an army defeated
xxThe snow hath retreated,
xxAnd now doth fare ill
xxOn the top of the bare hill;
The Ploughboy is whooping—anon—anon:
xxThere’s joy in the mountains;
xxThere’s life in the fountains;
xxSmall clouds are sailing,
xxBlue sky prevailing;
The rain is over and gone!
